Battle of Young Blood: BJP Announces Lijin Lal as Candidate for Pudupally By-Election

Pudupally Bypoll Turns Into Youthful Battle as BJP Announces Young Candidate

Kottayam

With just two days remaining for filing the nomination papers, the Pudupally by-election has taken a vibrant turn with the BJP introducing its young candidate. The national leadership has announced the candidature of Lijin Lal, the president of BJP Kottayam district. This move has re-energized the campaign, with UDF candidate Chandy Oommen and leftist candidate Jake C. Thomas also actively engaging in BJP events.

During the candidate selection process, the BJP considered several prominent figures including senior leader George Kurien, former district president N. Hari, and Manchu Pradeep. Initially, Anil Antony’s name was also thrown into the mix. However, both Anil Antony and George Kurien informed the national leadership that they would not be contesting. This lack of unanimity led to some delay in finalizing the candidate, inviting criticism over its potential impact on the campaign. Eventually, Lijin Lal emerged as the chosen candidate.

Lijin Lal, at the age of 40, previously ran as a BJP candidate in the Kattururthi constituency during the last assembly election. He has held various significant positions within the BJP, serving as the Yuva Morcha district president, state secretary, and BJP district secretary. Since 2021, he has been heading the party in his area and played a key role in coordinating voluntary work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lijin Lal hails from Kurichithanam and holds a Master’s Degree in International Business. He is the daughter of Anulakshmi S. Nair, a KSEB officer, and his wife Parvathi R. Nair.

Expressing his views, Lijin Lal emphasized that the BJP perceives the Pudupally bypoll as a political battle between the left and right fronts. He believes that the voters of Puthupally will not only discuss the Ganapati legend controversy but also address the challenges faced by this underdeveloped constituency.
