In the April 10 general election, a battle over degrading women broke out among Democratic Party of Korea primary candidates in Yeosu-eul, Jeollanam-do. Preliminary candidate Jo Gye-won criticized incumbent MP Kim Hoe-jae for “mobilizing human crowns,” and Rep. Kim highlighted preliminary candidate Cho’s “nice” remarks.

The starting point was the welcome event of the first Jeolla Line SRT Yeosu train held in September last year. At that time, some female members of the Yeosu-eul Regional Committee of the Democratic Party took commemorative photos with Representative Kim and hung wreaths and ribbons around her neck. When a media outlet pointed this out, the Women’s Committee said, “This was a voluntarily prepared event to celebrate the opening ceremony.”

The issue was mentioned again during the Democratic Party primary candidate debate held on the 6th. Preliminary candidate Cho said, “This is a situation where some city council members and female politicians are being turned into beautiful people.”

Then, the Women’s Committee held a press conference on the 7th and said: “The voluntary congratulations have been sexually denigrated as ‘cute’ and treated as sexual objects”, and demanded: “Candidate Cho apologize and resign” .

They said: “How can someone who wants to become a member of the National Assembly belittle women members of the same local committee by calling them “beautiful”?” and “This is a remark that clearly shows candidate Cho’s perception of women.” Then he said: “How can you say you want to become a gender-sensitive member of the National Assembly who perceives all women as commodities?” and “I apologize for my derogatory remarks toward women, and if there is no response to my request for the candidate’s resignation I will file a complaint.”

In response, preliminary candidate Cho also held a press conference. He said: “At the opening ceremony of the SRT in September last year, some female party members wore floral ribbons around their necks and rallied like human garlands,” and added: “Please apologize for turning the women in political instruments”.

Preliminary candidate Cho said, “That was the day Rep. Lee Jae-myung went on an indefinite hunger strike, risking his life,” and added, “I hope candidate Kim thinks about his gender sensitivity”. He continued: “I hope he apologizes for using a woman who should be respected as a scapegoat to further his achievements and as a tool for his advancement.”

On the 1st, the Democratic Party announced the primary race between Congressman Kim and preliminary candidate Cho in Yeosu-eul region. Potential candidate Cho, who served as a senior political leader during Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung’s time, presented himself as a “pro-Myung” candidate.
