A female doctor named Liu performed a hysteroscopic surgery on a female patient in September 2023 at the Hexin Jinsheng Maternal and Child Clinic in Bei City. During the operation, she accidentally punctured the uterus and right iliac artery, causing massive abdominal bleeding. The patient was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead.
According to the verdict, at around 8 am on September 14 last year, Dr. Liu performed a hysteroscopic surgery on a patient. She punctured the patient’s uterus with an instrument, creating a defect. The patient experienced a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, requiring immediate transport to National Taiwan University Hospital for emergency treatment.
Following the incident, Dr. Liu admitted medical negligence. Hexin Clinic ultimately reached a settlement of 10.5 million yuan with the patient’s family. Seven million yuan will be paid immediately, with the remaining 3.5 million yuan paid from January 2025 until fully settled at 700,000 yuan monthly.
The Taipei District Court judge considered Dr. Liu’s admission of wrongdoing and lack of prior criminal record. The judge should have been more careful and allowed the prosecution’s request for a plea bargain. She was sentenced to 7 months in prison, suspended for 5 years. This sentence is subject to appeal. However, if the settlement conditions are not met, the suspended sentence will be revoked.
