Behind the Scenes: The Rise and Fall of Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Project

Many have wondered why Nintendo has such a disinterest in Donkey Kong, which hasn’t had a major new adventure since Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was released for the Wii U over a decade ago.

Now it turns out they at least gave it some thought. After Activision Blizzard incorporated the Nintendo character into Skylanders Superchargers, Nintendo was so impressed that it teamed up with Vicarious Visions to start a new Donkey Kong game, apparently focused on the mobility of a donkey that can slide on vines.

At least, that’s what gaming historian Liam Robertson said in the latest episode of DidYouKnowGaming. Shigeru Miyamoto was also reportedly involved in the project, but the project was canceled six months later when Activision Blizzard wanted the studio to become a supporting developer on Call of Duty.

This prompted Vicarious Vision’s founding duo, Karthik and Guha Bala, to leave and start Velan Studios, which went on to work with Nintendo and release Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit in 2020.
