Court found not guilty on charge of drunk driving

A Belgian man has been acquitted of drink-driving charges after discovering he has a rare disease that causes alcohol to leak from his body.

This man, who works in a brewery, was mistaken for drunk driving, but three doctors who examined him confirmed that he suffered from auto brewery syndrome (ABS), a rare disease, the British Daily Guardian reported on the 22nd (local time).

Attorney Janse Ghesquier said, “It was an unfortunate coincidence that our client was found to be driving under the influence.”

Belgian media reported that the court emphasized in its judgment that the defendant did not suffer from symptoms of intoxication. However, in accordance with local judicial practice, the defendant’s name was not disclosed in the verdict.

“People with ABS disease produce the same type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, but generally feel less of the effects,” explained Lisa Florin, a clinical biologist at AZ Sintrukas Hospital in Belgium.

He added, “You’re not born with ABS,” and added, “It can develop when you’re already suffering from other bowel-related diseases.”

People suffering from ABS syndrome may exhibit symptoms consistent with alcoholism, such as difficulty speaking, stumbling, loss of motor skills, dizziness, and burping.
