Chapel Hill, N.C. — The arrival of Bill Belichick at North Carolina has injected new energy into the Tar Heels football program. Wide receiver Jordan Shipp remembers the team’s reaction upon learning that the six-time Super bowl-winning coach would be leading them. ”It was just like, ‘That’s the greatest coach of all time, and he’s about to be coaching us,'” Shipp said.
Belichick’s presence has spurred significant changes as the Tar Heels invest in his vision. Players,including both returning members and transfer-portal additions,are experiencing firsthand his overhaul of the roster and his efforts to establish a strong foundation for his first college team. The team had not spoken publicly since their Fenway Bowl loss to UConn in December,shortly after Belichick’s hiring.
Defensive back Will hardy noted the increased curiosity surrounding the program. “There’s a lot of ‘How is Coach Belichick? What’s new? What’s different?'” Hardy said, adding that he’s grown accustomed to answering questions about the new coach.
The university hired Belichick to elevate the football program, recognizing its crucial role in college sports revenue. Belichick and general manager Michael Lombardi are focused on implementing a pro-style model,a key selling point in recruiting and attracting transfer players.His initial on-field work occurred during spring workouts.
“Look, these are great kids to work with, thay really are,” Belichick said. “We’ve had great buy-in. There have really been no problems at all… They’ve made a ton of improvement and these guys are a lot better than they were when we started in January, on every level. So it’s exciting to see where that’s going to take us.”
Offensive lineman Christo Kelly, a transfer from Holy Cross and Belichick’s first portal commitment, admitted initial intimidation.”I mean, maybe at first when you see him, all you see is the Super Bowls that he’s won,” Kelly said. “But when you get here and you see the way he cares, you see the way that he approaches the game, you see how hard he works, there’s no question why he has the success that he has.” He added that Belichick’s attention to detail and emphasis on fundamentals are fostering a competitive surroundings.
Thad Dixon, a defensive back who previously played under Belichick’s son Steve (now the Tar Heels’ defensive coordinator) at Washington, eagerly seized the prospect to reunite. “I really just wanted the opportunity just to learn from somebody like that, that had did it in the league for so long,” Dixon said.
“The attention to detail, the emphasis on fundamentals, and really just kind of creating competition for the guys, that’s what’s getting built here. Guys are embracing it. He treats everybody with tremendous respect and it’s been great.”

Shipp noted that Belichick’s humor has been a pleasant surprise. “I feel like that’s the biggest curveball… He comes in and he introduces himself and then he busts a joke. That’s the second thing he said.” Hardy echoed this sentiment, adding that Belichick’s monotone delivery often amplifies the humor.
hardy also emphasized that Belichick’s serious side remains present, particularly during film sessions where mistakes are highlighted. The Tar Heels open their season against TCU on Labor Day.
“I’ve loved having 1-on-1 conversations with him,” Hardy said. “It’s cool to see and meet him personally… And he’s just a completely different coach and guy when you get to be around him all day. It’s cool.”
