Ben askren: Ex-UFC Star Considers Lung Transplant After Pneumonia Battle
Former UFC star and Olympic wrestler Ben Askren remains hospitalized as he battles a severe illness. Doctors are now considering a lung transplant, according to his wife, Amy Askren.
Amy Askren shared an update on Facebook, stating that her husband has experienced both “good” and “bad” days. He is currently on a ventilator and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) to support his healing.
“I’m still praying for a miracle with his current lungs, but they are currently starting the evaluation process for a lung transplant,” she wrote. “I know transplants are such a blessing and I’m overwhelmed at the thought of him receiving a gift like that. No one would take better care of that gift than Ben.”
Earlier this month, Amy revealed that Ben Askren developed severe pneumonia, which came on suddenly.
Askren, 40, recently joined Real American Freestyle, a wrestling venture promoted by Hulk Hogan. He was a two-time NCAA champion (2006, 2007) and competed in the 2008 Olympics for Team USA. He also won gold medals at the 2005 Pan american Championships and the 2009 World Championships.
He transitioned to MMA in 2010, fighting in Bellator and ONE Championship before joining the UFC.
In the UFC, Askren defeated Robbie Lawler before losing to Jorge Masvidal. He also participated in a boxing match against Jake Paul in 2021.
