Magnolia Pictures has taken its widest theatrical release to date with the action-comedy “Normal,” starring Bob Odenkirk and directed by Ben Wheatley. The film opened on over 2,000 screens across North America, marking a significant expansion for the independent distributor.

Despite the wide release, “Normal” earned $2.65 million in domestic box office revenue during its opening weekend. This figure represents the second-highest opening of Ben Wheatley’s career in North America, trailing only the 2023 release “Meg 2: The Trench,” which opened to $30 million and went on to gross $82.6 million domestically.

The performance places “Normal” among the stronger limited-action releases of the spring season, though it fell well behind the box office dominance of family-oriented titles like “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” which continued its third consecutive week at the top of the charts during the same weekend.

Industry analysts noted that while the opening did not match the blockbuster expectations sometimes associated with wide releases, it demonstrated Magnolia’s growing confidence in positioning genre-driven comedies with recognizable leads in expanded theatrical windows. The collaboration between Wheatley, known for his distinctive tonal shifts in films like “Free Fire” and “In the Earth,” and Odenkirk, fresh from his acclaimed dramatic turn in “Better Call Saul,” positioned “Normal” as a deliberate attempt to blend action spectacle with character-driven humor.

As of the April 20, 2026 reporting window, no further details regarding the film’s production budget, international rollout plans, or audience demographics had been disclosed by the distributor or production representatives.
