A female member of a local council belonging to Germany’s Green Party caused controversy after drunkenly giving a ‘Nazi salute’ on Remembrance Day to the victims of the ‘Holocaust’, which refers to the Nazi massacre of Jews. The Nazi salute refers to a greeting where the right arm is raised at an angle with the palm facing the floor.

According to local media such as Tagesspiegel on the 27th (local time), Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district council member from Berlin, Jutta Boden (63) was arrested for drunk driving on Highway 115 on the outskirts of Berlin at around 1:40 am on the this day.

Boden gave the officers the Nazi salute, also known as the “Hitler salute,” and then said “Heil Hitler” twice.

The day of the Boden accident was the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp and the United Nations Holocaust Remembrance Day. Nazi symbols and Nazi salutes are banned in Germany. Breach of this may result in a criminal penalty. On Holocaust Remembrance Day, a politician committed an act that would not be tolerated in German society.

He was found to be drunk at the time, with a blood alcohol level of 0.134%.

Boden was found to have threatened police officers by mentioning his identity. He also said, “You cannot imagine the political implications of this incident.” Police officers at the scene did not immediately identify Boden, but explained that they were looking for him on the Internet because of Boden’s words and behavior.

After this fact became known, Boden explained, “I felt that I had been treated unfairly by the police officers and I wanted to draw attention to it.” However, in a later police investigation, he said, “I reacted inappropriately,” and “Drink driving and my behavior (after being caught) was unacceptable.” He announced that he would take responsibility for his actions and resign from his position as a member of the National Assembly.

Police said they were continuing to investigate Boden on charges of drunk driving and using the symbol of an unconstitutional movement.
