For many, admiring neighborhood holiday decorations is a cherished tradition, as heartwarming as carols and gift-giving. Experts say there’s a scientific reason behind the joy these twinkling displays bring.
“It does create that neurological shift that can produce happiness,” Psychologist Deborah Serani told NBC’s “Today” show. “Anything that takes us out of our normal routine … signals our senses, and then our senses measure if it’s pleasing or not.”
Decorating for the holidays “will spike dopamine, a feel-good hormone,” she added.

L.A. Dazzles: Psychologists Explain the Science Behind Holiday Lights
Los Angeles residents take holiday decorating seriously, and now Patch wants to showcase the brightest and most festive displays across the county. But why are twinkling lights such a draw during this time of year?
Dr. Deborah Serani, a psychologist who spoke with NBC’s “Today” show, explained that holiday decorations can actually boost our happiness.
