The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has removed the International Boxing Association (IBA) and its sanctioned events from the state’s sports betting catalogue. This decision was reached unanimously by the commission on August 18, 2024.
The removal is based on a commission policy that prohibits wagers on any league or event overseen by a governing body headquartered in Russia or Belarus, or any body overseen by a Russian or Belarusian governing body.
Russian Governance and Operational Shifts
Although the International Boxing Association is officially headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, the organization has moved the majority of its operations to Russia. This transition followed the election of the current IBA President, Umar Kremlev, on December 12, 2020.
The IBA had previously been included in the initial approval of the Massachusetts sports betting catalogue in 2023. However, the current regulatory action strips the association and all its events from the available betting options.
International Oversight and Controversy
The International Boxing Association has also faced scrutiny from the International Olympics Committee, which has placed the organization under investigation.
