Beware: Major Online Retailers Selling Fake Cashmere Mufflers

Major Online Shopping Malls Unknowingly Sold Fake Cashmere Mufflers

A shocking revelation has come to light regarding a popular cashmere muffler sold at leading domestic online shopping malls. It has been exposed that the 247 SEOUL ‘Cashmere Muffler’ sold on platforms like Musinsa, W Concept, and 29CM does not actually contain any cashmere fabric.

Last October, concerned consumers who purchased the product reported their suspicions to the Korea Apparel Testing Institute (Katri) and FITI (FITI) by providing the muffler for inspection. The tests carried out by Katri confirmed that the muffler consisted of 70.4% polyester and 29.6% rayon, completely devoid of any trace of cashmere.

247 SEOUL, which is a brand of Sunsei Co., Ltd., had touted these mufflers as affordable options made with a mix of 30% cashmere, 10% wool, and 60% rayon in their product descriptions on renowned shopping platforms like Musinsa.

This deceit also extended to their ‘Premium Cashmere Muffler,’ which was claimed to contain 60% cashmere but, in reality, contained none at all.

The impact of this fraud is significant considering that over 86,000 pieces of the 12-color ‘Premium Cashmere Muffler’ and 6-color ‘Cashmere Muffler’ were sold on Musinsa alone within the past year. Even with conservative estimates, these sales account for approximately 2 billion won.

This scandal reveals that fake cashmere mufflers have been on sale at Musinsa for the last seven years, with the majority of these deceptive products being sold over the past four years. These mufflers gained popularity among consumers due to their purported cost-effectiveness, accumulating tens of thousands of reviews. Consequently, the actual damage inflicted upon consumers is expected to be far greater.

In response to the controversy, Sunsae Co., Ltd. has issued an official apology on their website. The company admitted their lack of understanding regarding cashmere fabric and acceptance of the authenticity of the Chinese manufacturing plant they visited. They assured consumers that if there was any intention to deceive, they would not have marketed and sold these mufflers. Additionally, they expressed their willingness to consider refund requests and even contemplate filing a criminal complaint with the guidance of a law firm.

An official from the Fair Trade Commission alerted Yonhap News to the fact that falsely indicating the mixing ratio of a product constitutes an infringement of the Electronic Commerce Act. This offense may lead to administrative measures, including fines, business suspension, and corrective orders.
