The Rise of Malicious Installers

However, a modified version of the game’s installer has recently been making its rounds on gaming forums and social media platforms. This modified installer has been found to be laden with malware, posing a significant threat to unsuspecting gamers.

Unveiling the Malware

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the compromised installer package contains three executables. One is the legitimate game installer file named “super-mario-forever-v702e.exe.” Alongside this file, there are two additional files called “java.exe” and “atom.exe.” These malicious files are discreetly placed within the AppData folder on the victim’s computer.

Disturbingly, the “atom.exe” file is responsible for initiating an illicit XMR (Monero) mining operation and even activates the notorious Supreme Bot mining client. Furthermore, cybercriminals have included an information-stealing tool named Umbral Stealer, allowing them to covertly capture screenshots of the victim’s Windows desktop or connected webcam.
