Limerick City Council is to investigate removing a bike park in the city centre, which has been described as being “desolate and empty”.
At this month’s metropolitan district meeting, Social Democrats councillor Elisa O’Donovan called for the removal of the steel bars which allow parking of bikes at Parnell Street.
She said: “There is endless steel bicycle parking. It takes away from the whole area of Parnell Street. It looks desolate and empty to have these stainless steel structures which have never been used to as bicycle parking.”

Cllr O’Donovan added: “I think it’s something we can do to make that area look a bit nicer”.
Council director of service Kieran Lehane said it’s something the authority will look at.
“If there is a surplus of it, we will take it away,” he said.
Bike Sharing Scheme Update
Separately, Cllr O’Donovan sought an update on the plans for the bike sharing scheme following transport Minister Darragh O’Brien’s announcement they will be replaced later this year.
The Importance of Bike Parking and Urban Design
Effective bike parking is a vital component of a enduring urban transport system. However, poorly planned or underutilized bike parking can have the opposite effect, creating clutter and detracting from the urban landscape. Here are some key considerations for successful bike parking:
- Location: Bike parking should be located in convenient and visible areas, close to destinations.
- Security: Secure bike parking, such as covered racks or lockers, can deter theft.
- Capacity: The amount of bike parking should be appropriate for the demand.
- design: Bike parking should be aesthetically pleasing and integrate well with the surrounding environment.
