Biden’s Prostate Cancer Diagnosis Sparks Debate Over Health Transparency

⁣ Updated ‍May 19,‍ 2025

Former President Joe Biden’s recent diagnosis of ⁣advanced prostate cancer has triggered widespread discussion among oncology experts and ‍reignited concerns regarding his decision to run for reelection last year. The diagnosis, revealed by Biden’s private office, ⁤indicates ⁤an aggressive form of the cancer that ‍has spread to ⁤his bones.

The⁣ timeline of Biden’s prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing during his presidency remains unclear. questions linger about whether ⁢elevated PSA ‍levels indicated a potential cancer⁣ risk⁢ while he was in ⁤office or campaigning.

The ⁢diagnosis surfaces amid growing scrutiny of Biden’s decision to seek a second term. After a debate performance against Donald ⁣Trump exposed concerns about his age and health, biden withdrew from the race, leaving⁣ Vice President Kamala Harris to lead⁢ the Democratic ticket.

A forthcoming book by Jake Tapper‌ and Alex Thompson,‍ titled “Original ‍Sin,” reportedly‌ details efforts by Biden’s staff to downplay the effects of his⁢ aging. The cancer diagnosis has ‌intensified questions about the honesty of Biden and his team regarding his ‍health.

David Axelrod,⁣ a former ‍senior advisor to President obama,‌ anticipates further conversations about Biden’s health.

President Trump acknowledged Biden’s diagnosis⁢ as “a very, very sad situation,”‍ but questioned why the cancer wasn’t detected and disclosed earlier. He ‍linked the situation to his long-standing‌ concerns about ‌Biden’s mental fitness.

While PSA tests aren’t typically recommended for men over 70 due ‌to potential false positives and treatment risks, annual‍ physicals for sitting‍ presidents are‌ more ⁣comprehensive. The absence of PSA testing ⁣could have resulted‍ in a missed ⁣prospect to detect the cancer’s progression.

A letter from Biden’s white House physician ⁢last February didn’t mention PSA testing, unlike a recent letter detailing Trump’s⁣ physical results. Biden’s aides haven’t ⁢commented on whether his office will ‍provide further details about his diagnostic testing history.

experts suggest ‍that even with PSA testing, an aggressive form of cancer might have been missed.⁣ Approximately 10% of ⁣newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients⁤ have advanced disease that‍ has spread.

Dr. Mark litwin, chair of UCLA ‌Urology, noted the rapid growth of aggressive prostate cancers, suggesting the tumor likely began recently. He ‌believes⁤ Biden was ⁢likely screened‌ for elevated PSA levels but⁣ could be among⁢ those whose⁣ cancers don’t elevate PSA⁢ or rapidly metastasize.

Litwin stated, “The fact that he has metastatic⁢ disease at diagnosis… just says that he is unfortunate.”

Other experts from various institutions concur that Biden’s diagnosis, based on available‌ facts, isn’t⁤ unusual for ⁢older men.⁣ Thay believe ⁤PSA testing was discussed, but ⁤it woudl have been within medical best ⁤practices to discontinue testing given his age.

Dr. ‌howard Sandler of ⁣Cedars-Sinai proposed ⁢three‌ possible explanations: a decision to stop screening, an‍ elevated PSA level‍ that wasn’t investigated due to Biden’s age, or ⁣an⁤ aggressive cancer that didn’t produce much PSA.

Zeke Emanuel,an oncologist and former Biden administration official, suggested ‍Biden likely had cancer for several years, potentially since the start of his⁣ presidency.

Litwin countered that while⁤ many older men have some form of⁤ prostate cancer, the aggressive form likely didn’t exist for as ⁢long as Emanuel ⁢suggested.

Cancer touches us all. Like so many⁤ of you, Jill and I have learned‍ that⁤ we are strongest in ‌the broken places. Thank you ‍for lifting ⁤us up with love and support. pic.twitter.com/oSS1vGIiwU

Vice‍ president JD Vance expressed‍ concern that Biden’s diagnosis underscores ‍previous concerns about ⁢his condition during his presidency. He questioned whether Biden⁢ was capable of fulfilling his duties and criticized those ‌around him.

Trump’s medical team has also ⁤faced transparency questions. During his ⁤COVID-19 diagnosis, his condition was reportedly more severe than ⁣acknowledged. His‌ aides often ‌use⁢ superlatives to describe his health.

In his first remarks on the ‍diagnosis, Biden shared a photo with his wife, Jill, stating, “Cancer touches us all… Like so‌ many of you, Jill and I have ⁤learned that we are⁣ strongest in ⁢the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love‌ and support.”

What’s next

The coming weeks will likely see increased discussion about the implications of Biden’s diagnosis, the role ⁢of PSA testing, and the standards of health transparency for‍ public figures.
