Biden Cancer Diagnosis: Aggressive Prostate Cancer
Former President Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer
Updated June 01, 2025
Joe Biden, the former U.S. president, is battling an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office announced Sunday. The diagnosis follows Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race last summer, which was largely attributed to concerns about his age and overall health. The former president,82,has a tragic history with cancer, having lost his son,Beau Biden,to glioblastoma in 2015.
Doctors discovered the cancer after biden reported increasing urinary symptoms. The diagnosis revealed a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone. Despite the severity, the cancer’s hormone sensitivity offers avenues for management, according to his office. Biden and his family are now consulting with physicians to determine the best course of treatment for this prostate cancer diagnosis.
Since leaving office, Biden had increased his public profile, including an appearance on “The View.” He also hired a communications strategist amid critical reviews of his time in the White House. His previous efforts to combat cancer include launching the “cancer moonshot” initiative during his vice presidency, which he later revived during his time as president.
The spread to the bones presents challenges, but the cancer’s receptiveness to hormone therapy could help slow its progression. Biden exited the 2024 race after a debate performance against Donald Trump raised concerns about his fitness for office. He then endorsed Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost to Trump in November.
Harris expressed her support via X, stating, “We are keeping him, Dr.Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time. Joe is a fighter.”
“We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time,” she wrote. “Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”
Trump also acknowledged Biden’s diagnosis on Truth Social, saying,”Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis…we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery,” he wrote.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom joined other politicians in offering well wishes. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) also said his family is praying for the former president.
“Our hearts are with President biden and his entire family right now. A man of dignity, strength, and compassion like his deserves to live a long and beautiful life. Sending strength, healing and prayers his way,” Newsom wrote on X.
