Former President Joe Biden, in his first public appearance since announcing his prostate cancer diagnosis earlier in May, told reporters Friday he is “optimistic” about his condition.
“Well, the prognosis is good,” Biden said. “You know, we’re working on everything. It’s moving along. So, I feel good.” He added that he has decided on a treatment plan that includes medication and expects to “beat this.”
biden’s office previously stated the cancer had metastasized to the bone. Though, Biden reassured, “It’s not in any organ. My bones are strong. It hasn’t penetrated so I’m feeling good.” He also noted his family shares his optimism and that he is working with a leading surgeon.
Addressing recent criticism about his mental and physical capabilities, Biden quipped, “You can see that — I’m mentally incompetent and I can’t walk,” with a smile.
When asked about Democrats who questioned his decision to run again, Biden responded, “Why didn’t they run against me then? As I’d have beaten them.” He affirmed he has no regrets about his choices.
Biden emphasized the meaning of the current global landscape. “There’s a lot going on. And I think we’re in a really difficult moment, not only in American history, in world history,” he stated. “I think we’re one of those inflection points in history where the decisions we make in the next little bit are going to determine what things look like for the next 20 years,” adding that he remains proud of his presidential record.
The exchange followed comments made Thursday by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who suggested former first lady Jill Biden should address concerns about her husband’s condition. Biden responded to Leavitt’s remarks with a smile, saying, “I don’t know who the press secretary is,” before clarifying he was joking.
What’s next
Biden is expected to continue his treatment plan and maintain a public schedule as his health allows. further updates on his condition will be provided as available.
