US President Joe Biden Calls for End to Sudan Conflict
Amsterdam, September 18, 2024 – Radio Dabanga
Immediate Withdrawal and Humanitarian Access Demanded
US President Joe Biden has urged the armed forces and rapid aid forces to withdraw their forces, facilitate uninterrupted access to humanitarian aid, and re-engage in negotiations to end the war. He has also called on all parties to the conflict to stop the violence and refrain from fueling it.
Protection of Civilians and Humanitarian Aid
In a press statement, Biden called on aid forces to urgently end their attacks, which are causing disproportionate harm to Sudan’s civilians. The Sudanese armed forces must stop the indiscriminate bombing that is destroying civilian lives and infrastructure.
El Fasher Under Siege
The city of El Fasher has been under siege for months by rapid aid forces, with the blockade recently escalating into a full-scale attack.
Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan
The conflict in Sudan has resulted in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with nearly a million people displaced, women and girls kidnapped and sexually abused, and famine spreading in Darfur, putting millions more at risk.
Unfettered Humanitarian Access
Both the Sudanese armed forces and rapid aid forces must immediately allow unfettered humanitarian access to all areas of Sudan, as they are currently delaying and disrupting life-saving humanitarian operations.
US Commitment to Peace and Accountability
The United States continues to push for peace and hold accountable those who perpetuate violence. The US has previously determined that members of the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Assistance Force have committed war crimes, and that Rapid Assistance Force members have committed crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.
Sanctions and Further Action
The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on sixteen entities and individuals for contributing to conflict, fueling instability, or serious human rights violations. The United States will continue to evaluate further allegations of atrocities and possible additional sanctions.
US Commitment to the People of Sudan
The United States remains committed to the people of Sudan, who deserve freedom, peace, and justice.
