Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops, continues to expand the golf offerings at his Big Cedar Lodge wilderness resort in the Missouri Ozarks with the new Cliffhangers course. Morris, along with his son, John Paul, designed the 18-hole par-3 course, which is scheduled to open July 4.
The course’s name reflects its design: an adventurous layout routed along steep mountain trails, across creeks, adn through limestone caves. Golfers will encounter waterfalls and a tee shot played from inside a cavern toward the green.
Big Cedar Lodge is billing Cliffhangers as “the most dramatic par-3 golf course in the world.” The land was originally planned as a practice facility, but the Morrises opted for a more enterprising project.

Cliffhangers joins a collection of courses at Big Cedar, including Ozarks National, a Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw design ranked 55th on GOLF’s Top 100 Courses in the U.S. You Can Play, and Top of the Rock, a Jack Nicklaus-designed par-3 course that has hosted a Champions Tour event.
What’s next
With the opening of cliffhangers, Big Cedar Lodge continues to solidify its reputation as a premier golf destination. Future plans for the resort have not yet been announced, but further enhancements and expansions are anticipated.
