Billy Gunn Criticizes Modern Wrestling’s Lack of Storytelling
AEW veteran Billy Gunn recently argued that contemporary professional wrestling prioritizes athletic spectacle over compelling storytelling, hindering emotional connections with audiences. Gunn shared his assessment during an interview with the All Real Wrestling Podcast.
Gunn acknowledged the evolution of wrestling beyond the style of the 1980s,but believes many performers have lost focus on fundamental elements that drive fan investment. He stated,”Nowadays, nobody knows how to work. They don’t know how to work in general. Working is like yes, we get it, back in the ’80s isn’t going to work now. As they’ve taken it so far to the extreme that you have to have very good basic storytelling for me to follow along, for me to see somebody actually wrestle.”
He explained that simply showcasing skilled wrestlers is insufficient to attract a wide audience. According to Gunn, conflict and clear motivation are crucial for engaging fans, surpassing the importance of athletic prowess alone.
Gunn’s comments highlight a recurring debate within the wrestling community regarding the balance between in-ring athleticism and narrative development.
