Billy Woods’ Golliwog: Horrorcore Masterpiece for A24 Fans
Billy Woods’ *Golliwog* is a Descent into Psychological Horror
Billy Woods consistently delivers complex and critically acclaimed work. His solo albums, including Hiding Places (2015) and Maps (2017), and his collaborations wiht Elucid as Armand hammer have established him as a vital voice in contemporary music. Though, his 2023 album, golliwog, marks a significant shift toward darker and more unsettling territory.
Golliwog distinguishes itself from traditional horrorcore. Artists like the Geto Boys, Gravediggaz, and Insane Clown Posse often employ slasher film tropes and shock value. Woods, instead, creates an atmosphere more akin to the psychological horror films produced by A24 than the jump-scare driven style of Blumhouse Productions.
The album opens with “Jumpscare,” beginning with the sound of a film reel and a music box, immediately setting a disquieting tone. The track features the line: “Ragdoll playing dead. Ragdoll playing dead.”
