Black Friday Shopping in Western Australia

Western Australia experienced a surge in Black Friday shopping. Many shoppers ignored rising costs to take advantage of early holiday sales. Retailers started promotions as early as November 6, extending the sales event beyond the traditional four days between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

This year, experts predict Australians will spend approximately $6.7 billion during this shopping period, a 5.5% increase from the previous year. Retail expert Gary Mortimer noted that consumers are capitalizing on deep discounts as they prepare for Christmas.

In November, Western Australians already averaged $778 each across various sales events. They are expected to spend an additional $1,124 each in upcoming sales before the end of the year. Mortimer highlighted that economic pressures affect spending behavior, leading consumers to save for November sales events.

The traditional December shopping season may see reduced spending. Mortimer anticipates that shoppers aged 35 to 70 will emerge as the biggest spenders this Black Friday weekend. He mentioned that younger shoppers, usually under 35, are more affected by rising living costs.

Despite ongoing economic challenges, shoppers like Christine Wallace spent over $500 at Karrinyup Shopping Centre. She focused on purchasing Christmas gifts, prioritizing sales and discounts. Joelene McGrath also spent around $500, primarily buying items for herself, such as discounted shoes and clothing.

Karrinyup centre manager Trudy Cook reported that Black Friday is now the busiest shopping day of the year, drawing tens of thousands of visitors. She noted that this sales event has grown larger than Boxing Day due to shoppers’ desire for good deals amid rising costs.

Overall, Black Friday shopping in Western Australia showcases consumer enthusiasm for bargains and illustrates changing spending patterns as holiday season approaches.
