Electronic Arts has halted development of its Black panther game and closed Cliffhanger games, the studio developing the title. Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, informed staff via email that the company is reallocating resources to focus on established franchises, including Battlefield, The Sims, skate, and Apex Legends.
The decision to cancel the Black Panther game, a highly anticipated action adventure, reflects a strategic shift for Electronic Arts (EA) toward titles with proven track records. The move impacts the future of the Black Panther game and the employees at Cliffhanger Games.
Miele acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, according to IGN,and assured employees that EA is committed to supporting them, including finding new roles within the company. Despite the cancellation of the Black Panther project, other Marvel games remain in EA’s pipeline. An Iron Man game is still in development, along with the next Star Wars Jedi title from Respawn and a new Mass Effect game from BioWare.
this restructuring follows layoffs in April 2025, which affected approximately 300 employees across Respawn Entertainment and EA’s Fan Care teams. At that time,EA also reportedly canceled a new Titanfall game and another unannounced project.
The Black Panther game, an original third-person single-player adventure, was announced in 2023 as part of a three-game deal between Marvel Games and EA. Cliffhanger Games, established in Seattle and led by former Monolith executive Kevin Stephens, comprised developers with experiance on major franchises like Halo, God of War, and Call of Duty.
What’s next
EA will continue development on its other Marvel projects, including the Iron Man game, as it focuses on its core franchises. The company aims to leverage its resources to maximize growth opportunities in the gaming market.
