Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks Agree on Mega Trade
The Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association (NBA) are conducting a mega trade with the New York Knicks, with the main goal being the transfer of Minnesota starting center Karl-Anthony Towns.
According to sources cited by ‘The Athletic’, in exchange for Towns, New York will send Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-round pick received from the Detroit Pistons to Minnesota.
Towns was selected by Minnesota with the first overall pick in the 2015 draft and played for the same team for nine seasons. In total, he played in 573 games and averaged 22.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.
Starting with Rookie of the Year in the 2015-16 season, he was an All-Star four times and All-NBA twice. After Rudy Gobert joined the team ahead of the 2022-23 season, he and Gobert formed a twin tower.
In 62 games, he averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. Although he was unable to play many games due to injury the previous season, he bounced back perfectly and was selected as an All-Star.
The team ranked 3rd in the Western Conference with 56 wins and 26 losses and advanced to the conference finals in the playoffs. Randle is a veteran who has played in 641 NBA games.
Last season, he only played in 46 games due to injury. He averaged 24 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists and was selected as an All-Star. He is a 3-time All-Star, 2-time All-NBA member, and winner of the 2020-21 Merit Development Award (MIP).
DiVincenzo played in 354 NBA games. Last season in New York, he played 81 games and recorded 15.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.3 steals. He recorded a 40.1% 3-point shooting success rate.
This trade is expected to immediately strengthen both teams. New York acquired swingman Michal Bridgets through a trade and then strengthened its strength through another trade.
Minnesota added depth to its roster with the addition of Randle and DiVincenzo. The trade is seen as a win-win for both teams, with each team addressing its needs and strengthening its lineup.
