Thes additions aim to provide valuable depth and flexibility as the team navigates the remainder of the season.
Mantiply Brings Left-Handed Arm, Seeks Resurgence
Mantiply, a familiar face in the major league landscape, joins the Blue Jays institution with a history of success, especially in his four-year run with the Arizona Diamondbacks. During that period, he showcased a respectable 6.1% walk rate and a strong 51.9% ground-ball rate, contributing three saves and an remarkable 50 holds.
However, the 2025 season has presented notable challenges for the 30-year-old southpaw. He has struggled mightily in limited big league innings, posting a daunting 15.83 ERA over 9 2/3 frames. His velocity has also been a concern, with his average fastball dipping to 88.2 mph in 2025, a noticeable drop from his peak of 91.3 mph and even last year’s 89.5 mph average. These struggles have extended to the minor league level, where he’s recorded a 5.56 ERA in 11 1/3 innings for the Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate in Reno.
bullpen Landscape in toronto
The Blue Jays already boast a solid contingent of left-handed relievers in their big league bullpen. Justin Bruihl, a recent addition to the roster, and the breakout setup man Brendon Little provide reliable options. Though, the team recently optioned Mason Fluharty to Triple-A Buffalo, creating an opening for additional southpaw depth.Fluharty, who was excellent through early June, experienced a rough patch before his reassignment.
Mantiply’s arrival adds another veteran lefty with a track record, joining Amir Garrett, who is also currently with the blue Jays’ Triple-A club in Buffalo. Both pitchers will be looking to earn a call-up to Toronto by showcasing their abilities in the minors.
Kennedy offers Versatility and Minor League Prowess
In a separate move, the Blue Jays have also added Kevin Kennedy, a player who brings a valuable blend of infield and outfield experience. Kennedy has appeared in parts of four major league seasons with the Diamondbacks, Tigers, and Phillies, though his major league plate appearances are limited to 157.
At the big league level, Kennedy has hit .193/.287/.296. However, his minor league numbers paint a more promising picture, with a .279/.388/.432 slash line over more than 1600 Triple-A plate appearances. He has already begun his tenure with the Buffalo Bisons, going 0-for-7 with a walk in his first eight plate appearances.
Kennedy’s defensive versatility is a key asset. While he has primarily played second and third base throughout his professional career, he also possesses significant experience at first base (over 400 innings) and has logged 93 innings in left field. This all-around capability makes him a valuable piece for manager john Schneider and the coaching staff.
