Broadcast Agreement for Pivotal Playoff push
As the Toronto Blue Jays pursue their first playoff berth in two years, Sportsnet has reached an agreement with Apple TV+ to simulcast friday’s game against the Kansas City Royals on Rogers’ Sportsnet airwaves. This collaboration aims to maximize accessibility for Canadian fans during a crucial period in the season.
Sportsnet will produce Blue Jays Central pre-game coverage at 7 p.m.ET / 4 p.m. PT, and post-game analysis, while broadcasting the game itself as produced by Apple TV+. This arrangement allows fans to continue enjoying Sportsnet’s signature pre- and post-game programming alongside the Apple TV+ game feed.
Rationale behind the Deal
A Rogers spokesperson stated, “This is a really exciting time of year for Blue Jays fans, and we wanted to try and find a way for Canadians to watch Friday’s game on Sportsnet, especially at this pivotal moment of the season. In working with the Blue Jays, Major League Baseball and Apple TV, glad we found a way.”
The initiative began when it became clear that the Blue Jays could potentially clinch a postseason spot during the Friday Apple TV+ broadcast. Both Sportsnet and the team proactively approached Major League Baseball (MLB) to explore a potential agreement with the streaming service.
Future Broadcast Rights and Apple TV+ Exclusivity
MLB facilitated the agreement, which also grants apple TV+ exclusive broadcast rights to next Friday’s game between the Blue jays and the Tampa bay Rays. This marks an expansion of Apple TV+’s exclusive MLB coverage, part of their multi-year partnership with the league announced in 2022.
Playoff Picture Update
Despite a 4-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, September 14, 2023, and a 3-1 win for the Cleveland Guardians over the Detroit Tigers, the Blue Jays’ earliest opportunity to clinch a playoff spot is now Saturday, September 16, 2023. Current MLB standings show a tight race for the American League Wild Card spots.
As of September 15, 2023, the Blue Jays’ “magic number” for securing a postseason berth remains three. This means that any combination of three Blue jays wins or losses by the teams chasing them will guarantee toronto a playoff spot.
What is a “Magic Number?”
In baseball, the “magic number” represents the number of games a team needs to win (or a combination of wins and losses by their competitors) to clinch a playoff berth or a division title. It’s a dynamic calculation that changes daily based on game outcomes.A magic number of one means a single win clinches the spot, while a higher number indicates a more complex scenario involving both team wins and competitor losses.
