The 2026 Boat Race, held on 4 April 2026, delivered contrasting results for the historic rivals as Cambridge extended its dominance in the men’s event while Oxford broke a decade-long drought in the women’s race.
Cambridge secured their fourth consecutive victory in the 171st Men’s Boat Race, maintaining their streak despite challenging weather conditions on the River Thames in London.
In the 80th women’s race, Oxford claimed victory, marking their first win in the event since 2016.
Cambridge Men Overcome Brutal Conditions
Entering the race as strong favorites, the Cambridge men faced a blustery afternoon with wind gusts predicted to reach 38 miles per hour. The conditions were described by Cambridge bow Simon Hatcher as brutal
, particularly in the white-capped section at Chiswick.
Due to the sea-like conditions, both crews took the rare precaution of using electric pumps to displace water from the boats, accepting the additional weight to ensure the vessels remained buoyant.
Oxford remained competitive in the early stages, holding Cambridge to a narrow lead of less than four seconds at the Mile Post. However, the Light Blues pulled away at the midway point to finish with a lead of just over 11 seconds, winning by three-and-a-half lengths.
The conditions tend to make equals of us all. A lot can happen that’s unexpected when the conditions rear up like that. We handled it well enough to get our bow well enough ahead at the end.

Following the victory, Noam Mouelle, now a four-time winner of the race, led the celebrations for the Cambridge crew.
Oxford Women End Ten-Year Drought
The women’s race provided the day’s biggest upset as Oxford ended a losing streak that had lasted since 2016. The victory was celebrated by the Oxford crew and their president, Heidi Long, who lifted the trophy after the race.

Reporting from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and The Canberra Times highlighted the contribution of an Australian athlete in helping Oxford secure this long-awaited win.
Event Details and Broadcast
The races were conducted along the 4.2-mile Championship Course between Putney and Mortlake on the Tideway. This year’s event marked the second year of title sponsorship by the French luxury brand Chanel, officially known as the Chanel J12 Boat Race.
The 2026 event was the first in a five-year broadcast agreement with Channel 4, which took over the television rights in October 2025. The coverage featured veteran presenter Clare Balding, Jamie Laing, and Ade Adepitan.
Olympic rowing champion Martin Cross, commenting for Channel 4, noted that the rough water acted as a leveller, praising the way the Oxford men held on during the early stages of their race against Cambridge.
