Bonnier News AI Boosts Print Efficiency by 50%
Bonnier News Automates newspaper Production with AI
Bonnier News is leveraging AI,through a system called Naviga,to automate much of its newspaper production process. This initiative has lead to increased efficiency and the creation of a new, rapidly growing role: the print planner.
How Naviga Works:
* Content Assignment: Naviga checks ad placement and assigns content to available spaces within the newspaper layout.
* Automated design: Once the ”run” button is pressed, the AI handles the page design.
* Human Oversight: Print planners maintain control of the system, monitor content, and make editorial decisions. Thay provide feedback to the AI for further refinement.
* InDesign Compatibility: Pages generated by Naviga can be opened in InDesign for editors to make adjustments to text, images, or headlines.
The Rise of Print Planners:
The implementation of Naviga has created a new professional group within Bonnier News – print planners. There are currently over 30 print planners working across the company’s offices in Malmö and sundsvall, Sweden, making it the fastest-growing professional group within the organization.
Challenges and Limitations:
* infographics: Initially, processing infographics was challenging. however, recent automation allows the AI to recognize news graphics, avoid cropping/resizing, and handle smaller visuals.
* Complex Graphics: Larger graphics, like full-page spreads, still require human creation.
* Byline photos: The system currently struggles with byline photos (small reporter portraits).
Positive Results:
* Seamless Transition: Readers haven’t noticed any changes in the newspaper layout as Naviga’s implementation, indicating a prosperous integration.
* Expansion Plans: bonnier News is now focused on automating more of its newspapers.
