Developed in partnership with the nonprofit Saving Sight, the initiative provides eligible patients at the hospital with the option to repurpose birth tissues that are typically discarded after childbirth.
How the First Gift Program Operates
The First Gift program is designed to integrate smoothly into existing hospital procedures without placing extra burdens on patients. First Gift staff meet with mothers who schedule a cesarean section to discuss the voluntary donation process. According to hospital details, the recovery procedure occurs entirely after delivery, meaning mothers undergo no additional medical procedures. Boone Health notes that a single donated placenta and umbilical cord can yield enough tissue to help upwards of 75 people.
