Six years. That’s how long fans have waited for a new installment in the borderlands franchise. Now, Gearbox Software is back with Borderlands 4, promising more of what we love: guns, mayhem, and that signature Borderlands humor. But does this new entry bring enough innovation to justify the wait, or is it just more of the same?
Borderlands 4 launches September 12, 2025, on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and the upcoming Switch 2.
A Familiar Story, a New World
Borderlands 4 takes us to Kairos, a new planet with familiar problems. A maniacal commander, hordes of wild creatures, even wilder psychos, a struggling resistance, ancient vaults, and vault hunters seeking fortune and glory. Oh, and Claptrap is back, of course.
Let’s be honest: the story isn’t going to win any awards. After the previous episode, the bar is set low, and the plot is functional at best. Don’t expect the narrative depth of Borderlands 2. The story takes a backseat to the gameplay, following a predictable “defeat the lieutenants before facing the big boss” formula.
