Born in the Eye of the Storm: How Typhoon Capricorn Unleashed Wu Xingmei’s Inner ‘Storm Goddess
Happy Ng: The Self-Proclaimed “Storm Goddess” of Hong Kong
Last night, Happy Ng and Min-Fong Lee co-hosted the popular show “East and West.” Despite the challenges posed by Typhoon Signal No. 8, the duo successfully completed the live broadcast. Before the show, Happy took a selfie in the makeup room, commenting, “I played the power of the Goddess of Storm again. Typhoon Signal No. 8 has been raised. Be careful when you go home from work. At 7:30 pm, we will see #EastWest #Announcer.”
During the program, Happy and Min-Fong mentioned that although there was no rain at Tseung Kwan O TV City, the strong winds caused them some difficulties. After the live broadcast, they were both caught off guard by the gusty winds, which left them in a state of embarrassment. A comic strip provided by Yukimi added a lighthearted touch to the situation, showcasing the duo’s ability to laugh at themselves.
In a telephone interview, Happy shared the story behind her self-proclaimed title of “Storm Goddess.” She explained, “My parents had a very strong typhoon called Ellen in 1983, which ‘made’ me. My mother said it was a Category 12 typhoon, but I searched online and found that it was actually a Category 10 typhoon. The storm ‘made’ me, and I was born in the hospital when it was windy and rainy, so the typhoon is inextricably linked to me.”
Happy also shared her experiences working in the industry during typhoon days. She recalled, “I often went to work on typhoon days. At that time, I encountered Typhoon Signal No. 10 and went out to do reporting. Later, I tried to sit in the factory with Typhoon Signal No. 10. Today, I sit in the factory, and it was successfully completed and returned home safely. The company was kind enough to arrange a typhoon for us to pick us up and drop off our behind-the-scenes colleagues safely to and from work.”
