Boston Marathon 2027 Sets Record With 5:17 Cutoff Time and New Entry Selection

Registration for the 2027 event closed following an application window from September 14 to September 18, 2026. The Boston Athletic Association reported receiving a total of 33,656 qualifier entry applications from athletes across 129 countries and all 50 U.S. states, according to data released by the organization.

Stricter Cutoff Times for 2027 Entry

Surpassing the official qualifying standard by minutes has become essential to earn a bib as competition surges globally. For men aged 18 to 34, securing a spot required running a time of 2:49:43, marking the first time the fastest cutoff threshold dipped below 2:50. For women in the same 18-34 age division, the required cutoff time settled at 3:19:43.

Cutoff times have accelerated over recent cycles. For the 18-34 male category, breaking three hours was sufficient before 2024 (aside from 2021, when COVID safety protocols limited the field size), with thresholds dropping to 2:54:31 in 2024, 2:53:09 in 2025, and 2:50:26 in 2026. Because of these tightening margins, approximately 7,000 runners who achieved their nominal age-group qualifying standard ultimately missed the cut for the 2027 race, as noted in reporting by the Globe.

New Boston Qualifier Selection and Field Demographics

To address the volume of applicants, the organization introduced the “Boston Qualifier Selection” for 2027. This change allocates 1,000 spots through a random selection process for candidates who met their age-group standard but fell short of the 5-minute, 17-second cutoff threshold.

The overall field size for the marathon is capped at 30,000 participants. The accepted qualifiers join international runners, professional athletes, handisport competitors, and participants representing the official charity program sponsored by Bank of America.

Among the accepted time-based qualifiers, approximately 10,745 runners are preparing to participate in their first Boston Marathon. Meanwhile, the field includes 849 veteran runners admitted after completing at least ten consecutive Boston Marathons or maintaining membership in the B.A.A. Running Club. Accepted participant ages span from the minimum requirement of 18 years old up to 84 years old, alongside 215 athletes who qualified under Para Athletics standards.

Leading Qualifying Marathons and Global Reach

Athletes earned their entries by competing in certified marathons around the world. The 2026 Boston Marathon served as the primary feeder race, supplying 4,448 accepted participants for the upcoming 2027 roster. Additional major events contributed significant shares of the qualified field:

• Bank of America Chicago Marathon (2025): 2,043 qualifiers
• TCS New York City Marathon (2025): 826 qualifiers
• California International Marathon (2025): 812 qualifiers
• TCS London Marathon (2026): 610 qualifiers

To earn a spot into this race takes dedication and resiliency, and the number of marathoners worldwide only continues to grow, Fleming said in a statement published by the Globe. Although we are unable to accept all applicants into the race, we want to recognize each and every athlete who trains and aspires to participate in the Boston Marathon.

Next Steps for Registered Athletes

The Boston Athletic Association is currently reviewing submission details, with formal notifications of acceptance and non-acceptance continuing via email through early October. Credit cards submitted during registration are authorized for payment upon application, but entry fees are charged only to athletes officially accepted into the event.

Meanwhile, the qualifying window for the subsequent 132nd Boston Marathon—scheduled for April 17, 2028—opened on September 19, 2026, and will remain active through September 2027.
