Table of Contents
For generations, the granite quarries of Bohuslän, Sweden, have provided the raw material for countless structures. But one family, the Anderssons, has not only worked the stone but has also poured their heart adn soul – quite literally – into creating a lasting artistic legacy known as ”Böt’s Heart.” As of August 23, 2024, their story continues to resonate with both locals and those who appreciate the artistry of stone carving.
From Quarry to Creation: A Family Tradition
The Andersson family’s connection to the granite of Bohuslän dates back to 1918, when Carl Andersson began quarrying the stone. Over the decades, the business evolved, and Carl’s son, Sten, took over, recognizing the potential for more than just raw material. Sten envisioned transforming the granite into unique artistic creations, and in the 1960s, he began experimenting with sculpting.
This artistic spark was further ignited by Sten’s wife, Birgitta, a skilled artist herself. Together, they developed a distinctive style, focusing on organic forms and smooth, polished surfaces. Their work quickly gained recognition, and commissions began to flow in from across Sweden.
“Böt’s Heart”: A Symbol of Love and Loss
The most iconic piece created by the Anderssons is undoubtedly “Böt’s Heart.” The sculpture was commissioned in 1972 by Gunnar and Maj-Britt Karlsson as a memorial to their son, Böt, who tragically died in a motorcycle accident. The Karlssons specifically requested a heart-shaped sculpture carved from Bohus granite, reflecting the enduring love for their lost son.
Sten and Birgitta poured their skill and empathy into the project, creating a sculpture that is both gorgeous and deeply moving.the polished granite radiates a warmth that belies its cold material, and the heart shape is a universal symbol of love and remembrance. The sculpture is located at the cemetery in Brastad, and has become a local landmark.
Passing the Torch: A Third Generation of Artisans
the Andersson family tradition continued with their son, Johan. Johan learned the craft from his parents, honing his skills in both quarrying and sculpting. He has since taken over the family business, maintaining the high standards of quality and artistry established by his parents and grandfather.
Johan has expanded the family’s repertoire, creating both traditional memorial stones and contemporary sculptures. He also collaborates with architects and designers on larger projects, bringing the beauty of Bohus granite to a wider audience. He emphasizes the importance of preserving the traditional techniques while embracing new technologies and artistic approaches.
We want to honor the legacy of my grandparents and father while also pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with this amazing material.
