Boxing hero Pacquiao retires to run for Philippine presidential election next year

Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao (43, Filipino) has announced his retirement.

In a 14-minute video posted to his Facebook account on the 29th (Korean time), Pacquiao said, “I just heard the last bell. Boxing is over.”

He continued, “I never thought the day would come when I would take off my boxing gloves,” he thanked fans around the world.

Pacquiao achieved an unprecedented feat of supremacy in the eight weight divisions in boxing history. Pacquiao, who is currently a Philippine senator and has been involved in politics and boxing, will face the biggest challenge of his political career after retiring from boxing.

Pacquiao officially announced that he would run for president in the Philippines in May next year.

Born in a slum on Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines, Pacquiao became the first in the world to win eight weight divisions, starting with the lightweight flyweight division.

He was twice selected as the ‘Boxer of the Year’ by the American Boxing Journalists Association, and his fourth game against Marquez was selected as the ‘Game of the Year’ in 2012. In 2009, she was selected as the cover model for Time magazine.

Pacquiao won 12 world titles and finished his career with a record of 72 wins, 62 wins (39 KOs), 8 losses, and 2 draws.
