Boys Life,formed in 1993 in Kansas City,Missouri,played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Midwest emo. Alongside contemporaries like Braid,Christie Front Drive,and others,they bridged the gap between heavier indie rock and emotionally resonant songwriting.
The band comprised vocalist/guitarist Dylan butler, guitarist Joe Winkle, bassist John Rejba, and drummer John Anderson. their music was characterized by intricate guitar work, introspective lyrics, and a raw, energetic delivery.
Thematic Depth of *Ordinary Wars*
According to butler, *Ordinary Wars* delves into themes of resisting manipulation and recognizing a larger purpose. He stated, “It’s about a value system down.The war would be inside each of us. Denying those forces trying to buy our minds and time. We are a part of something much bigger. So it’s not an ordinary war.”
from Reunion Shows to New Material
Boys Life initially reunited in 2015 for three shows and again in 2024 for two concerts. However, it was the 2024 reissues of their back catalog, curated by Numero Group, that truly reignited their creative spark.
The band recorded *Ordinary Wars* in June 2024 at Weights and Measures Soundlab in Kansas City, working with producer Duane trower. This marks the first time they’ve written and recorded new material together since their original run in the 1990s.
