The ongoing strike at Belgium’s postal operator bpost continued to disrupt parcel and registered mail services on Monday, April 20, 2026, as negotiations between management and unions remained unresolved despite a recent proposal from company leadership.

According to bpost, parcel processing is currently affected by union action, with delays possible in Flanders and parcels blocked within the network in Wallonia and Brussels, where processing has been temporarily suspended. The company noted that parcel tracking information may remain unchanged until operations resume.

The strike, which has now entered its fourth week, is part of a broader industrial action against bpost’s transformation plan aimed at prioritizing its parcel delivery business amid declining traditional mail volumes. Unions have been staging strikes for about three weeks in response to proposed changes to workers’ schedules and operational roles.

Last week, bpost management announced that an agreement had been reached on the transformation plan for mail and parcel distribution, but unions stated that the proposal still needed to be discussed with staff before any final acceptance.

On Monday, mediation talks between bpost management and trade unions failed to produce a breakthrough, according to reports. Union representative Luc Tegethoff of VSOA Post indicated that fewer than 20% of delivery rounds operated in Brussels last Friday, with the figure dropping to “close to zero” on Monday.

Distribution hubs in Liège and Charleroi are reportedly clogged with undelivered registered mail, including biometric residence cards, Annex 46 work-permit approvals and family-reunification decision letters that foreigners need to collect at local communes. In Flanders, service levels remain better at around 85%, though business districts around Ghent and Antwerp are experiencing three-day lags in delivery.

The disruption has affected not only household parcels but also critical immigration documents, causing delays for employers relying on timely work permit approvals and for foreign nationals already in Belgium who cannot complete municipal registration without the physical decision letter proving their combined work-and-residence permit status.

Bpost, Belgium’s partially privatized postal operator in which the federal government holds a majority stake, continues to face pressure to resolve the labor dispute as the strike enters its fourth week with no final agreement in sight.
