You were as beautiful as ever. We only had 11 days as husband and wife; we were still on our honeymoon,
Tiago Nascimento wrote in a social media post, capturing the sudden end of a trip that turned fatal in Leiria, Portugal.
Amanda Nascimento, a 29-year-old intensive care nurse from Brazil, died from an apparent severe allergic reaction to shrimp on Wednesday afternoon, just 11 days after marrying her husband, Tiago, on October 10. The newlyweds were on the final stop of their European honeymoon in the historic central Portuguese city when the medical emergency unfolded.
The Lunch in Leiria and Sudden Onset of Symptoms
The couple had stopped at a restaurant for lunch on Wednesday, where Amanda consumed shrimp and other seafood, according to statements Tiago provided to the Brazilian newspaper Metropoles. Her brother-in-law told the Brazilian news outlet G1 that Amanda was allergic to shrimp and believed restaurant staff had told her the dish contained only fish when she inquired about the ingredients.
She ate a little and we went for a walk around the city, we went to a bookstore,
Tiago recalled. Approximately two hours after the meal, at around 4:30 p.m. local time, Amanda began experiencing an allergic reaction.
Emergency Transfer and Cardiac Arrest Before Hospital Arrival
Amanda was rushed to a local area hospital in Leiria, but attending physicians determined the facility could not provide the necessary level of critical care required for her condition. Medical staff initiated a transfer to Coimbra University Hospital, located about 49 miles north.
Before the ambulance could reach Coimbra University Hospital, Amanda suffered a cardiac arrest and died. The couple had been scheduled to conclude their honeymoon and fly back to Brazil on Friday.
Mantevida Hospital Remembers the ICU Nurse
Amanda had been employed since May 2025 as a nurse in the intensive care unit at Mantevida Hospital in Brazil’s Federal District. In a public statement, the hospital honored her career and character: Her presence, her commitment, and her humanity remain in the memory of those who knew her and those who were cared for by her.

Tiago remembered his late wife as a humble, sweet, and extraordinary person who dedicated her life to caring for others and cherished her Catholic faith. She passed away doing what she loved most, which was traveling,
he said.
We had built a life together, and I will never forget the affectionate, sweet, incredible, and humble woman you were—always so thoughtful and organized. My heart is in pieces.
Tiago Nascimento
