Innovative Approach to mosquito-Borne Disease Control
Brazil inaugurated the world’s largest biofactory in Curitiba dedicated to increasing the population of mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria, a novel method for combating dengue fever, as reported by Reuters.
The “Wolbito Do Brasil” plant, a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health, the World Mosquito Program, and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, is capable of producing up to 100 million mosquitoes per week.
Potential Impact and Coverage
luciano Morara, the factory’s general manager, estimates the facility could protect approximately 7 million people every six months, with a projected total of 140 million people over the coming years.
dengue fever, frequently enough called “the fever of broken bones” due to the severe pain it causes, is transmitted by the aedes Aegypti mosquito and affects hundreds of millions globally.
Dengue Crisis in Brazil
brazil experienced its worst year on record for dengue in 2023, with 6,297 deaths, according to data from the World Health institution.
How Wolbachia Works
Wolbachia bacteria prevents mosquitoes from transmitting dengue, Zika, or chikungunya viruses. The strategy involves releasing infected mosquitoes, wich then breed with the local mosquito population, spreading the bacteria and blocking viral transmission.
This method, considered safe, has already been implemented in eight Brazilian cities, protecting over 5 million people since 2014.
Expanding Mosquito Release Operations
As production at the factory increases, specialized vehicles will transport and release mosquitoes directly into outbreak areas to mitigate the risk of epidemics.
