(Gimhae = Yonhap News) Reporter Choi Byeong-gil = The establishment of a second special school in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do is expected to solve the serious problem of overcrowding in education for the disabled.

Gyeongnam Provincial Office of Education, Gimhae City, and Booyoung Housing announced on the 30th that they recently signed a business agreement to establish a second special school in Gimhae.

The second special school was initially planned to be built on the site of an elementary school located at 631-4 Nongsori, Juchon-myeon, Gimhae-si, but encountered difficulties due to issues with access to sunlight, which is important for academics.

Gimhae City decided to actively cooperate in promoting the administrative procedures necessary for land exchange.

There is only one special school in the Gimhae area, with a population of about 550,000, and it is Gimhae Grace School.

This school opened in 2002 with 8 classes and 59 students, but now has 61 classes and 344 students, making it the largest overcrowded school in the country, leading to continued calls for additional establishments in the region.

The second special school is scheduled to open in 2029 with 25 classes at a project cost of 52.3 billion won.

This school will operate a specialized curriculum to strengthen career vocational education and employment support for students with disabilities, including high schools and major departments for specialized vocational education.
