Breaking Down Barriers: Government Pushes for Expanded Leave and Tax Incentives to Support Families Through Miscarriage and Stillbirth
[앵커]
The President’s Office announced that in order to continue the recent rebound in the birth rate, it is pursuing measures to restore the health of women involved in miscarriage and stillbirth and to expand support for families with infertility.
They said they would also increase benefits for family-friendly companies. Let’s hear about that.

The current leave period for miscarriage and stillbirth during the first 11 weeks of pregnancy is 5 days, which is not enough to recover from physical and mental damage caused by miscarriage or stillbirth.
Accordingly, we would like to expand the vacation period to 10 days. In addition, we plan to establish a new spousal miscarriage and stillbirth leave system to help spouses recover physically and mentally.
In order to reduce the burden on infertile couples, we plan to revise related guidelines so that local governments can support medical expenses even if the procedure is stopped despite the infertility procedure being performed against the patient’s wishes.
If a small or medium-sized business that has excellent work-life balance or is certified as a family-friendly company is selected for a regular national tax audit, it will be able to apply for a deferral of the audit from January of next year. These measures will be discussed and announced in more detail at the 5th Population Emergency Measures Meeting on October 30.
