Breaking Ground: Minister Kurum Unveils Shocking Findings of Kahramanmaraş Fault Study Report
Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Conducts Large-Scale Survey Studies in 11 Provinces
The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has begun large-scale survey studies in 11 provinces after the February 6 earthquakes, centered in Kahramanmaraş. These studies were carried out under the coordination of the Ministry and under the guidance of scientists from universities.
In Onikişubat Kahramanmaraş District, field studies were conducted in approximately 7 thousand 854 hectares of dangerous areas, and detailed inspections were carried out at some points on the fault lines. Trenches were dug and samples taken under the supervision of scientists to reveal the potential of fault lines to produce an earthquake and their age. Laboratory results for these samples were sent to the laboratory in London for further analysis.
Results of the Study Report
Minister Kurum examined the study report with MPs Kahramanmaraş Ömer Oruç Bilal Debgici, Mevlüt Kurt, Tuba Köksal and Kahramanmaraş Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fırat Görgel. According to the results, the suitability for settlement in the region has been clearly determined. Some of the Kahramanmaraş fault zones do not have the potential to produce earthquakes, and therefore, there is no need to set a ‘fault avoidance zone’.
Construction can be established in accordance with the determined measures in regions that do not have the potential to produce earthquakes and are declared as ‘precautionary areas’. However, there is a risk of earthquakes in the fault zone segments passing through the region, which starts from Afşar District and ends around the stadium in Hayrullah District. No construction work will be carried out in this region.
Microzonation Survey Report
The relevant municipalities should review their zoning plans in accordance with the Microzonation Survey Report obtained according to the results of scientific investigations. As a result, the municipality will make amendments to the zoning plan, considering the suitability of the microzonation obtained for the specified settlement, in accordance with the decision of the plan and the necessary construction work can be done.
Construction Work in Kahramanmaraş
Minister Kurum provided information about the construction work done in Kahramanmaraş, stating that 20 thousand 764 houses and workplaces have been provided and that the construction of 45 thousand 347 houses and workplaces continues. By the end of the year, 32 thousand 255 new houses will be distributed to their beneficiaries in the city.
