Islamabad High Court Orders Removal of Senator Shibli Faraz’s Name from ECL

The Islamabad High Court has ordered the removal of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and opposition leader in Parliament, Senator Shibli Faraz’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL) within a week.

Justice Tariq Jahangiri’s Verdict

Justice Tariq Jahangiri heard the contempt petition for not removing Senator Shibli Faraz’s name from the ECL despite the court’s previous order. The judge asked if the name had been removed from the ECL, to which Shibli Faraz’s lawyer replied that no report had been submitted.

Justice Jahangiri questioned why such issues were not being raised in the assembly, given that the individuals involved were parliamentarians. Shibli Faraz’s lawyer responded that the opposite was being done in the assembly, and even the speaker had commented on the matter.

Court’s Directive

Justice Jahangiri directed that Senator Shibli Faraz’s name be removed from the ECL within a week and that the court be informed of the action taken. The court adjourned the hearing of the case for a week, warning that if the court order was not implemented, the Interior Secretary would be required to appear in the next hearing.

Background of the Case

The Islamabad High Court had previously ordered the removal of Senator Shibli Faraz’s name from the exit control list on August 2.

The petitioner’s lawyer had informed the court that there were four FIRs against Senator Shibli Faraz, all of which he had been granted bail for. The court had asked the public prosecutor to explain the basis for the ECL listing.

The public prosecutor had stated that they would follow the court’s order, but Justice Jahangiri had expressed dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Interior and DG Passports’ responses.

The court had ordered that Senator Shibli Faraz’s name be removed from the ECL within a week and that a report be submitted to the court.
