A malaria vaccine, developed in Brazil, is approaching an important milestone. This vaccine targets Plasmodium vivax, the most common malaria strain in Brazil and the Americas. It is currently in the patent phase and is expected to start human trials early next year, pending regulatory approval.
Preclinical results indicate that the vaccine is high quality, safe, and effective. No vaccine exists for Plasmodium vivax, which spreads through bites from infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
In Brazil, there are three main malaria parasites: vivax, falciparum, and malariae. Only the falciparum strain has a vaccine recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Since 2021, this vaccine has been given to children in selected sub-Saharan African countries.
The creator of this vaccine stated, “This is a world-first product, entirely produced in Brazil. My goal from the start, over a decade ago, was to develop a vaccine. We are now at the final stage before gaining authorization for clinical trials.”
This development marks a significant step forward in public health efforts against malaria in Brazil.
