This finding is based on a phase 2 clinical trial that explores the use of food as a medicinal treatment. The study indicates that white button mushroom supplements can reduce a type of immune cell known as myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). These cells can suppress the immune response and promote cancer growth.
The study combined laboratory findings with preliminary human data. City of Hope researchers found that using white button mushrooms can lead to a decrease in MDSCs and an increase in anti-tumor T cells and natural killer cells. This suggests that these mushrooms may help rebuild the immune defense against cancer.
