Costa Rican authorities are still investigating the death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner. Miller Gardner died in Costa Rica on March 21 while vacationing with his family.
Initial reports suggested an accidental death, possibly due to carbon monoxide poisoning. However, Sharon Hernandez Coto, a spokeswoman for the Costa Rican prosecutor’s office, stated that authorities are now working to determine whether the cause of death was a homicide and, if so, to establish responsibility. The investigation into the death of Miller Gardner remains open.
The prosecutor’s office emphasized that each case is handled individually and that the investigation’s purpose is to determine whether a possible homicide occurred. They added that it is indeed not possible to confirm or rule out a crime at this time. The family of Brett Gardner has declined to comment.
Following Miller Gardner’s death, Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, released a statement through the Yankees, noting that Miller had fallen ill along with other family members while on vacation. An official with the Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) initially indicated the family suspected food poisoning from a restaurant.
Later, OIJ Director randall Zuniga reported that high levels of carbon monoxide were detected in the room where the family was staying. The case has been sent to the prosecutor’s office in Quepos,near the resort where Miller Gardner’s body was found.
Miller Gardner played high school football and wore No. 11, the same number his father wore during his 14 seasons with the Yankees. Brett gardner, a key member of the 2009 championship team, retired in 2021.
