(Seoul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Gye-hwan = Western-backed F-16 fighter jets will be sent to Ukraine for the first time, a Ukrainian Air Force spokesman said on the 2nd (local time).

According to the Ukrainian media Kiev Post and the American current affairs magazine Newsweek, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Ilya Yevlash said that if everything goes according to the current plan, the F-16 fighter jets will arrive after the Orthodox Easter, which falls on the 5th of next month.

However, a spokesman for Yevlash did not comment on the specific arrival time.

He explained that he was waiting for the F-16 to arrive, considering that the delivery schedule had been delayed several times so far.

“Our mission is simply to execute what we were given,” he said, adding that the timing of F-16 support is up to the political and military hierarchy.

F-16 fighter jet support to Ukraine was initially expected to be provided last year, but has since been delayed several times, and it was recently reported that it will be provided within the second quarter of this year.

Experts believe the delay in Western support is likely a result of training for pilots and maintenance personnel and the construction of related infrastructure rather than problems with the fighter itself.

So far, the countries that have expressed their intention to provide F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine are Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium, and Poland has announced its intention to support the maintenance of F-16 fighter jets .

When the F-16 fighter jet, which is expected to carry short- and medium-range missiles and bombs, is sent to the battlefield, it is expected to be of significant help to Ukraine’s army, which is suffering from shortages. ammunition and other military supplies.

Ukraine has been requesting support for F-16 fighter jets since late 2022, the first year of the Russian invasion, saying it must dominate the skies to counterattack.

Meanwhile, the British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, announced that he would provide 3 billion pounds (about 5.1522 trillion won) in aid to Ukraine every year until needed.

Secretary Cameron, who visited Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, for the second time since he took office, said in an interview with Reuters that the war in Ukraine is “a challenge facing our generation.”

He said that 3 billion pounds a year is the largest amount of aid decided by the UK since the start of the war in Ukraine, and that some equipment has already arrived in Ukraine on this day.

He also said that Ukraine has the right to use weapons that are supported by Britain and that he would not object if Ukraine used these weapons to attack the Russian mainland.

According to the BBC, the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, who visited Ukraine in January this year, announced that he would provide military aid worth up to 2.5 billion pounds (around 4.2 trillion won) this year.
