Overview of the Meetings
Diah Zuraini Kanchanawati Tajuddin, representing Brunei, attended three important regional education meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, from August 20-22, 2025: the South-East Asian Ministers of Education Organization (Seameo) Executive Committee Meeting, the 20th Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Education (Asean SOM-ED), and the 15th Asean Plus Three Senior Officials Meeting on Education (Asean SOM-ED+3). These meetings focused on regional education collaboration, progress updates, and future planning.
Seameo Executive Committee Meeting
The annual Seameo Executive Committee (exco) meeting brings together senior education officials to provide guidance to Seameo high officials. Key responsibilities include setting strategic directions for Seameo Units,advising on the management of the Seameo secretariat,and contributing to the overall development of the Seameo centres. The committee reviewed the Seameo Secretariat’s work plan and results framework, as well as project and program proposals. Decisions were made to endorse proposals for the 48th Seameo high Officials’ Meeting, scheduled for November 2025.
Seameo, established in 1965, aims to promote cooperation in education, science, and culture in Southeast Asia. Asean and Asean Plus Three Meetings
Following the Seameo Exco meeting,the Brunei delegation participated in the 20th Asean SOM-ED and the 15th Asean SOM-ED+3. These annual meetings serve as platforms to discuss ongoing regional education issues and assess the progress of regional educational plans and initiatives. The “Plus Three” countries – China, Japan, and South Korea – actively participate in these discussions, fostering collaboration beyond the Asean member states.
The meetings also explored opportunities for further collaboration with Asean dialogue partners, expanding the scope of regional educational cooperation.Asean’s work plan for education, currently in its 2021-2025 phase, guides these collaborative efforts. Brunei’s Contributions and Updates
During the Asean SOM-ED and Asean SOM-ED+3 meetings, Brunei’s Permanent Secretary updated attendees on the progress of activities led by the Ministry of Education under the Asean Work Plan on Education 2021-2025. These initiatives include programs spearheaded by Seameo Voctech and the Brunei Darussalam Leaders and Teachers Academy. Officials from Brunei’s Ministry of Education were also present at the meetings.
