Brunei’s Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah traveled to Singapore on Tuesday, Sep 29, to meet with senior government leaders, marking the 12th iteration of the bilateral Young Leaders’ Programme. Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the discussions focused on strengthening economic ties, navigating complex global developments, and preparing for upcoming national milestones between the two nations.

Bilateral Discussions and Leadership Meetings in Singapore

Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah, who is also a senior minister in Brunei’s Prime Minister’s Office, engaged in a full schedule of high-level diplomatic meetings during his visit. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam hosted Al-Muhtadee Billah to tea, while Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong held talks with him. Additionally, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong hosted Al-Muhtadee Billah to lunch.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that both governments used the meetings to discuss global developments of common interest. Leaders evaluated ways to deepen cooperation in areas that directly generate commercial opportunities for businesses and citizens in both countries. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong noted via social media that trusted partnerships carry heightened value as the international environment grows increasingly uncertain and complex.

Preparing for the 60th Currency Interchangeability Agreement Anniversary

A central focus of the diplomatic engagement centered on the enduring ties between the two nations, which are anchored by personal relationships among leadership generations. Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasized that continuous efforts must be made to nurture these personal connections.

Both administrations reaffirmed their commitment to a special relationship ahead of next year’s 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement.
