▶ Flight to ‘Lawless World’ Haiti

On the 11th, a U.S. passenger plane was hit by a bullet in Haiti, a Caribbean island nation that has turned into a lawless world due to gang violence, and had to urgently change its route to a neighboring country. The Miami Herald and CNN Spanish reported that a Spirit Airlines flight that took off from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this morning was approaching its destination, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, when it was shot in the sky and changed course to the neighboring Dominican Republic and landed in the Santiago region.

No passengers were injured, but one crew member was injured, the Miami Herald reported. Passenger planes heading to Port-au-Prince were diverted, and the local airport (Toussaint Louverture International Airport) appeared to have temporarily suspended operations. It is not known who did it. EFE news agency reported that the leader of Haiti’s largest armed gang, Jimmy Cherizier, posted a video on social media the day before, saying, “It is better for residents of the capital, Port-au-Prince, to stay inside their homes,” threatening to increase the level of armed activity. .

As security instability in Haiti deepened due to the outlaw-like activities of gangs, including murder, looting, sexual assault, kidnapping, and arson, interim Prime Minister Gary Cornill, who was working to fill the vacuum in the administration, was dismissed after just five months in office. The Associated Press and the Washington Post (WP) reported that the Transitional Committee, which was launched in April to prepare for Haiti’s presidential election, appointed Didier Pisseme, an entrepreneur and former president of the Chamber of Commerce, as the new prime minister.

The AP reported that Haiti’s transitional committee was responsible for alleviating the political crisis along with the prime minister while making legal and administrative preparations to hold a presidential election within two years, but some members of the transitional committee were involved in an infighting with former prime minister Corneal’s side. Last month, three members of the interim committee were caught by the Haitian Anti-Corruption Unit (ULCC) on charges of demanding $750,000 from a key member of a state-run credit bank, and media outlets analyzed that the conflict with Corneal grew further in the process.
