Blanca Peto, a doctoral student at the University of California, Riverside, noticed this pattern while studying the nesting habits of more than 100 queens over 45 days. Peto observed that queens would lay eggs in bursts, followed by periods of inactivity.Her findings, published in BMC Ecology and Evolution, challenge conventional wisdom about the reproductive role of bumblebees.
Peto’s research revealed that these pauses in egg-laying correlate with the developmental stage of the existing brood. When pupae, or nearly mature bees, were introduced to the nests, the queens resumed laying eggs within about 1.5 days. Without the presence of pupae, the pauses stretched to an average of 12.5 days. This suggests that queens respond to cues from their developing offspring, timing their reproductive efforts accordingly.
“Ther’s something about the presence of pupae that signals it’s safe or necessary to start producing again,” Peto said. “It’s a dynamic process,not constant output like we once assumed.”
